課程概述

We anticipate to have classes on the following dates: September 21, 2007; Sept
28; October 5; Oct. 12; Oct 19; Oct 26; November 2 (off, for the Symposium in
Honor of C.N. Yangψ 85th Birthday); Nov 9, Nov 16 (Noting that Nov 13-15
is the International Symposium on Cosmology and Particle Astrophysics); Nov
23; Nov 30; December 7; Dec 14; Dec 21; Dec 28; January 4, 2007; Jan 11.
On a day or two, I have to visit the doctor and the hospital so that the class will
begin late. Even though my lectures need to be improved a lot (particularly
after my cerebral haemorrhage more than three years ago, the writing from my
right hand has not recovered), I request that those students who register for
the class try to show up before me for all the classes.
Final Exam: January 18, 2007. (It is to be counted as 40% of the final grade.)
No midterm exam; the homework problems for different chapters at the various
due dates are required - 60% of the final grade.
Chapter 1. General Introduction
Chapter 2. Elementary Particles as Quantum Fields
Chapter 3. Quantum Electrodynamics
Chapter 4. Quarks and Symmetries
Chapter 5. An Introduction to the Standard Model
Chapter 6. A Brief Survey of Weak Decays and Electroweak Reactions
Chapter 7. CP Violation in the K0 − 銋 0 and B0 − 腹 0 Systems
Chapter 8. Astrophysics and Cosmology
Textbooks and References
Of course, I will distribute the written lecture notes, which should be studied
carefully. Among the following textbooks, personally I would like to recommend
strongly the book by Halzen and Martin, for its beautiful writing. My friend
1
E.M. Henleyψ third edition of 奸ubatomic Physics?just came out and it looks
quite good.
Note that particle physics is already mature in 1990ψ as reflected by all the
books - what is left over is mainly the neutrino physics; it will take long time
to settle down. Of course, the B physics is also important but I rate it much
below as compared with the neutrino physics.
I think that my lectures should be called 在ntroduction to Theoretical Particle
Physics?instead of 在ntroduction to Particle Physics? although I am trying
to use as much intuition as possible. However, I apologize for the need to use
the acrobat files, and other computer files, for this teaching - because of the
temporary handicapped situation. In other words, the materials may appear
too quick compared to your thinking.
